Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Visitor Guide: Dress Code, Timings & Tips

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and a highlight of any UAE trip. This guide covers what to wear, when to go and how to visit from Dubai.

Why Visit?

Completed in 2007, the mosque is one of the largest in the world. Its white marble domes, reflective pools, floral inlay work, enormous hand-knotted carpet and crystal chandeliers make it unforgettable. Entry is free for visitors who follow the dress code.

Dress Code

• Women: loose, ankle-length clothing, long sleeves to the wrist and a headscarf covering the hair
• Men: long trousers and shirts that cover the shoulders (no sleeveless tops)
• No tight, short or see-through clothing
• Shoes are removed before entering the prayer halls

When to Visit

The mosque is open to visitors most days, but it closes for visitors on Friday mornings for prayers. Late afternoon is a favourite time – the marble glows in the sunset light and the mosque is beautifully lit after dark. Opening hours can change during Ramadan and on public holidays, so we always check before your visit.

Visitor Etiquette

• Speak quietly and respect people praying
• Photography is allowed in most areas, but avoid photographing worshippers
• No public displays of affection
• Follow the marked visitor route and any guidance from staff
