What to Wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai: Complete Packing List
Choosing the right outfit makes your desert safari far more comfortable – and your photos look better too. Here is what to wear and what to pack.
Clothing
Wear light, loose and breathable clothing in cotton or linen. Light colours reflect the sun and look great against the red dunes in photos. While there is no strict dress code at the camp, the UAE is a conservative country, so it is respectful to cover shoulders and avoid very short shorts.
- T-shirt or long-sleeved cotton shirt
- Comfortable trousers, maxi skirt or knee-length shorts
- A scarf or shemagh – useful against sand and sun
- A light jacket or hoodie from November to February
Shoes
Sand gets everywhere, so wear sandals or closed shoes you do not mind getting sandy. Many guests take their shoes off and walk barefoot on the soft dunes. Avoid heels and expensive trainers.
What to Pack
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Phone or camera (a zip bag protects it from sand)
- Small amount of cash for optional extras like quad biking
- Wet wipes and a small towel
- Any personal medication
- A hat or cap for afternoon sun
Season-by-Season Tips
Summer (June–August): the lightest clothes you have, plenty of water and sunscreen. Winter (December–February): evenings in the desert get chilly, so bring a warm layer. Spring and autumn: a light layer for after sunset is enough.
Tips for Dune Bashing
Eat a light meal before pickup, keep your seatbelt on and tell your driver if you prefer a gentler ride. Dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant women or anyone with back problems.
Getting the Best Photos
Bright colours – red, yellow, white and blue – stand out beautifully against orange sand. The best light is the 30 minutes before sunset on an evening safari.
